My ‘simple good’ is equality because I believe that people should be treated fair and have equal opportunities no matter their race, age, or even sexual preference. My ‘simple good’ was inspired by the fact that treating others inappropriately/or discriminating against them based on their beliefs. I plan on using my meaning of the ‘simple good’ to improve my community and change the world by changing others ideals that have been drilled into them by others. I say drilled because one doesn't just decide to discriminate against another. Something has to lead up to that moment or someone has influenced them into that mindset. Your beliefs shouldn't override what they like to do and what makes them happy in life. A simple good question I would ask others is: What thing in the world do you believe should be changed/fixed?

"My simple good is to be caring and courageous. I feel this way because when someone actually cares for me it gets me really happy and it also gives me courage to do the right thing. I feel like this is very important because we all know that we have to care for each other and it’s really nice to do something good for others and see them smile. It is also harder for the other people because if there close to the person that is suffering it is hard for them to see that person cry or be sad. I think my work will impact the Little Village community because it will make people reflect and communicate with others. I think the Rwanda students will gain courage and also many happinesses from my artwork."

Student Simple Good Statement
My ‘simple good’ is to find the beauty in everything because it allows us to appreciate the little things. My ‘simple good’ was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend about the importance of keeping a positive mindset and finding beauty in all situations. I depicted my ‘simple good’ in my art by making the picture focus on the beauty in the photo. I wanted the picture to seem a little more dramatic and make the flowers pop more as that’s the beauty that came out of the photo for me. I plan on using my meaning of the ‘simple good’ to improve my community and change the world by teaching and showing others to always find the beauty in things even in a world of negativity. This is important to me because nowadays there is so much negativity and a lot of the time we try to sit and dwell on things we can’t change. Instead we can find the good or beauty of a situation even when it doesn’t work in our favor.

My ‘simple good’ is capturing the moment because I like to capture moments during the day. My ‘simple good’ was inspired by how much I like to capture the moment in things. Layla's Simple Good Statement:
My ‘simple good’ is finding light through trials and tribulations because I believe it is crucial that we take time to focus on our wellbeing while taking on and internalizing the world around us. My ‘simple good’ was inspired by my grandmother. My grandmother has always taught me to see light or see the bigger picture in every situation I encounter even if it is small. This has taught me to appreciate the little things, good things, and even the bad things because life is too short to not take advantage of all the good things that are going on in a world full of chaos.
I depicted my ‘simple good’ in my photo by showing the Nederlander Theater located in Downtown Chicago and the sunlight beaming behind the sign to show light popping out through the dark shadows in the picture. I went to see MJ The Musical and that was something that brought me joy throughout all the negative things going on in the world.
I plan on using my meaning of the ‘simple good’ to improve my community and change the world by showing and educating people on the importance of looking at the positive even when you are surrounded by negative because it will not stay that way forever. This is important to me because I had to learn to take care of myself and know when I need a break. I’m still learning that I don’t always have to do something. I should be aware and know when I’m burnt out. This will help me not only mentally, but physically, and emotionally.

My ‘simple good’ is my global change because there have been many people that have changed the world in big ways. My ‘simple good’ was inspired by people that bring change to the world, like our past Presidents. I showed my ‘simple good’ in my artwork by taking a picture of a poster that I found interesting that showed all of the presidents in United States history. I plan on using the meaning of the ‘simple good’ to improve my community and change the world by telling people that they should learn about our past and history. This is important to me because I hope to make people understand that in learning about your past you are also learning about present times.

Mon bien simple est la paix et l'amour parce que j'aime vivre dans la paix. Mon bien simple a été inspiré par l'art parce que j'aime peidre. J'ai représenté mon bien simple dans mes œuvres d'art par en peigmant un symbol. J'ai l'intention d'utiliser mon sens de bien simple pour améliorer ma communauté et changer le monde par la paix parce que c'est bien d'etre en paix. C'est important pour moi parce que le fais de vivre les gens heureux me rond aussi heureux. Une bonne question simple que vous poseriez aux autres est : Pourquoi les gens m'aime pas faire la paix?
English Translation (Love and Peace)
My simple good is peace and love because I like to live in peace. My simple good was inspired by art because I love to paint. I have represented my simple good in my artwork by painting a symbol. I intend to use my meaning of simple good to improve my community and change the world through peace because it is good to be at peace. It's important for me because having happy people makes me happy too. A good simple question you would ask others is: Why don't people like me to make peace?

During Winter 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic that still dictated our realities, there was no certainty on what life would continue to look like. It was during this time when Chicago non-profits, The Simple Good and BUILD Chicago, came together to reflect on the challenges of the past year and how we can work together to create light amidst the chaos. It did not take long for the youth to become the highlight of the discussion, being inspired by the resilience they always show. It was important for us to celebrate their continued strengths, leadership, and acts of simple good that they take part in everyday in order to show the world that these are acts that truly impact others.
This compilation of comics was inspired by The Simple Good’s ‘Sheroes of COVID-19’ book, which shared stories about female sheroes from across the globe who stepped up their leadership to spread the simple good during the pandemic. We wanted to challenge our girls to also think of themselves as change agents in their worlds as Sheroes of Chicago- elevating their truths that they have discovered throughout the pandemic.
This book is written by BUILD Chicago’s BUILDing Girls 2 Women youth who will share how they are Sheroes in their Chicago communities, depicting the ways they have used their meaning of the simple good to change their world. Read their stories and join their movement in order to create a better world… together.

HISTORY OF THE SIMPLE GOOD ART ACTIVITY BOOK BELOW:The first Simple Good SEL-based Art Activity Book (2020 launch) is a beautiful tool of hope that emerged during the pandemic as we realized that many of our communities did not have access to the internet to participate in our virtual programs. In response to the drastic inequities in mental health and education access in Chicago, we collaborated with artists from around the world to create a physical book with our SEL and Mindfulness-based curriculum. Within the first year of publishing we received 3,000 book requests from schools across Chicago. Today, The Simple Good's SEL-Based Art Activity Books (2020) continues to be used in the classrooms and by adults alike!
