Each TSG Quote Tee is inspired by the meaning of the simple good of our students. Each year we select 5 students' messages of 'the simple good' to put on our quote tees for a limited series release. The tees represent the various communities we serve and are selected through a public vote in order to amplify the voices of our youth & support their TSG Youth Art Programs.

This "Equality" Tee is inspired by TSG Youth Ambassador, Deshawn F.  from Roseland. Check out his meaning of #thesimplegood below!

My ‘simple good’ is equality because I believe that people should be treated fair and have equal opportunities no matter their race, age, or even sexual preference. My ‘simple good’ was inspired by the fact that treating others inappropriately/or discriminating against them based on their beliefs. I plan on using my meaning of the ‘simple good’ to improve my community and change the world by changing others ideals that have been drilled into them by others. I say drilled because one doesn't just decide to discriminate against another. Something has to lead up to that moment or someone has influenced them into that mindset. Your beliefs shouldn't override what they like to do and what makes them happy in life. A simple good question I would ask others is: What thing in the world do you believe should be changed/fixed?

"My simple good is making the world better because there is too much fighting and hurt in the world, especially right now. My simple good came from connections to seeing others try to make life better. I depicted my simple good in my work by trying to portray the idea that art can create various emotions in different people. This throw pillow echoes our TSG Ambassador, Jackelyn's, 'simple good' artist statement that she shared during her TSG Student Final Art Showcase. Read her statement below:

"My simple good is to be caring and courageous. I feel this way because when someone actually cares for me it gets me really happy and it also gives me courage to do the right thing. I feel like this is very important because we all know that we have to care for each other and it’s really nice to do something good for others and see them smile. It is also harder for the other people because if there close to the person that is suffering it is hard for them to see that person cry or be sad. I think my work will impact the Little Village community because it will make people reflect and communicate with others. I think the Rwanda students will gain courage and also many happinesses from my artwork."

I am a photographer, filmmaker, and story-keeper rooted in Chicago. My work explores belonging, and how beauty and pain live in the same frame. I’m drawn to real light, real color, real life. I photograph as an act of witness and preservation, honoring the dignity of people in the places they call home.

The images I made in Palestine grow out of that same commitment.

I wasn’t chasing spectacle. I was paying attention to artists still creating, parents still raising their children, churches and mosques still gathering, all in the midst of colonial occupation. Murals against concrete walls. Kids playing within sight of checkpoints. Community refusing erasure. This work about the persistence of continuing to tell your story no matter what.

'Generational Wealth' by Jason Hayth

My work is rooted in storytelling  visual narratives that celebrate culture, identity, and the power of representation. Through bold color palettes, expressive portraiture, and symbolic composition, I explore themes of empowerment, resilience, music, spirituality, and transformation.

I am drawn to the human figure as a vessel of emotion and history. Each piece seeks to capture not just likeness, but presence,  the energy, dignity, and layered experiences of my subjects. My work often centers Black identity and culture, creating imagery that affirms, uplifts, and reimagines how stories are seen and told.

Blending contemporary figurative painting with elements of pop culture and imaginative symbolism, I aim to bridge fine art and accessibility. Whether on canvas, murals, or wearable pieces like hand-painted sneakers and jackets, my art exists beyond traditional boundaries; it is meant to be lived with, experienced, and felt.

At its core, my work is about visibility and connection. I create to inspire confidence, spark conversation, and honor the beauty and complexity of the stories that shape us.

Jason Hayth is a multi-disciplinary visual artist based out of Chicago whose work reflects identity, culture, and the unseen stories of underrepresented communities. Hayth’s work consists of both traditional acrylic on canvas, sneaker art, woodworking, and digital paintings in Photoshop. A bi-racial Black and White artist, Jason’s journey has never fit neatly into any box—something he once saw as a curse but now embraces as a unique perspective that fuels his creativity.

Facing a world that profits from their disposal can be overwhelming for Black boys. And even still, young Black men offer their energy and power to make the world a better place.

My art practice seeks to actualize the hypothetical world in which my parents were born in a time and place where they could self-identify as artists. Growing up in large, working-class families in 1960s rural Alabama, getting married young, and raising me and my two sisters, they worked jobs to provide for their family and community. Yet, they still created beauty for others via wood, flowers, fiber, and paper.

Growing up with this people-focused artistic heritage, I now use my work to provoke human flourishing, explore the freedom found in active grieving, and examine the relationship between the two. In 2010, I joined the Great Migration about 40 years too late when I moved to Chicago from Grove Hill, Alabama. With a regular focus on the Great Migration bringing about Black flourishing amidst the challenges of urban life, the silent and subconscious grief of losing regular connection to the land is often overlooked and human flourishing is unfortunately equated to urbanization. With a modern southern experience and my family’s collective grief shaping my past and the artists of the Great Migration inspiring my future, I make work that encourages acceptance of loss and excitement for personal growth.

Self Care explores hope through quiet preservation. The woman stands still, turned away, surrounded by open space that allows room for self care & reflection. In a world that constantly demands more from us, choosing to pause and care for oneself becomes a pure act of strength, love and resilience. The work suggests that hope is not always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it is inherited through small, intentional acts that allow us to continue forward with clarity and balance.

I am Reggie McFly, a Chicago based mixed media artist working in paint, clay, yarn, fabric, and tactile materials. My work moves in an imperfectly perfect rhythm, a dance between creativity and evolution. Each element travels across the surface like a dancer guided by instinct and trust, where texture becomes perspective carrying memory, emotion, and layered stories.

As a visually impaired artist, losing my eyesight reshaped how I create. It taught me to trust instinct, emotion, and energy, transforming what could have been an ending into a new beginning. My process embraces experimentation, allowing each piece to unfold naturally through curiosity and faith.

My works emerge like improvised performances. They are textured, vibrant, and layered, built through trial, error, and the lessons found in both. The art is meant to be felt as much as it is seen.

Through this work, I invite others to embrace the beauty within imperfection, move to their own rhythm, and discover meaning within the ever changing performance of life.

'Weight in The Water' by Reggie McFly

Regular price $12,000.00

Weight in the Water reflects the struggle of staying afloat beneath the pressures and expectations that society places on us. The man reaching upward represents the instinct to keep rising, even when the weight of the world threatens to pull us back under. Just when it feels like we are about to break through, the current can shift again. In the distance, the lifeboat represents help, salvation, and freedom, reminding us that what we need may be closer than we think, even when we cannot yet see it clearly. In that tension between sinking and rising, hope is carried forward through resilience and the decision to keep living with purpose.

Student Simple Good Statement:

My ‘simple good’ is capturing the moment because I like to capture moments
during the day. My ‘simple good’ was inspired by how much I like to capture the
moment in things. I depicted my ‘simple good’ in my photo by Taking a photo of a
good setting on the rooftop. I plan on using my meaning of the ‘simple good’ to
improve my community and change the world by using my ability to capture the
moment during taking photos. This is important to me because I like to capture
the moment while I'm taking photos.
